| This is the Old Uranium Mine... |
Well it took us about 50 minutes from Cloncurry to drive to the old Mary Kathleen township and former Uranium mine.

Mary Kathleen was a mining settlement in North Western Queensland. It was first settled in the 1860s. The township has been closed since 1982.
Mary Kathleen and the Uranium mine is a very interesting site.
The colour of the water within the mine pit looked so pretty, but is said to be radio active and obviously toxic, however, travelling backpackers have been known to have a dip in the water...I wouldn't though, no matter how hot we were!
The township itself is also very interesting. There are concrete slabs where once homes, convenience stores, a school once stood. On one slab there is a letter box with books inside for visitors to date and sign (we all signed and dated a book).

| We made the mistake of not wearing runners or something with some grip, however, we still managed to climb over the rocks without too much fuss, but runners would have been better... |
